Nemesis

Orphic Hymnos

An Nemesis

I call you, Nemesis! Highest! Divinely ruling queen! All-seeing, You oversee the life of many-stemmed mortals. Eternal, Holy One, Your joy is only the righteous. But Thou hateest the glass of speech, The colorful, always wavering one, Whom men shun, who bow their necks to the oppressive yoke. Thou knowest all men's opinion, And never does the soul elude Thee haughty and proud On the blurred gush of words. Into everything you look, all listening, all decisive. Yours is the judgment of mankind.

Greek mythology

Goddess of righteous anger

Nemesis (Greek Νέμεσις Némesis, German 'Zuteilung (of the charging)') is in Greek mythology the goddess of righteous anger, of balancing justice, making her the goddess of vengeance.

Her companion is Aidos, the goddess of shame. Nemesis punishes especially the human hubris and the disrespect of Themis, (the goddess) of divine right and morality.
